Who is this course designed for?
The workshop is designed for beginners and intermediate artists interested in botanical drawing with coloured pencils. No previous experience with coloured pencils is required.
What materials will we be working from?
Students will work directly from fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables, and living plant specimens collected from the studio gardens and surrounding property. Participants are also welcome to bring meaningful specimens of their own.
What will I learn?
Students will learn observational drawing techniques, colour mixing, layering and blending with coloured pencils, botanical composition, value and shading, and strategies for rendering transparency, reflected light, waxy surfaces, matte surfaces, and complex colour relationships found in plants.
Will there be demonstrations?
Yes. Each day includes demonstrations, practical exercises, individual feedback, and opportunities for group critique and discussion.
Will I complete finished work during the course?
Yes. Students can expect to complete finished pieces during the week while building a strong technical foundation for future independent practice.
Where does the course take place?
The workshop is held in Jeannette Sirois' professional studio on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia. Students will have access to the studio, courtyard gardens, and outdoor drawing spaces overlooking Trincomali Channel and the surrounding Gulf Islands.
Can I work outside?
Absolutely. Depending on weather and personal preference, students may work indoors in the studio, in the planted courtyard, or on the deck overlooking the ocean and islands.
What flowers and plants will be available?
August on Salt Spring Island offers an abundance of seasonal material including dahlias, lavender, sweet peas, heritage roses, and a variety of fruits and vegetables harvested throughout the week. Available specimens will vary depending on the season.
Do I need to bring my own materials?
A materials list will be provided upon registration. Students are welcome to bring additional botanical specimens that hold personal significance or that they would like to study.
What accommodation options are available?
August is peak season on Salt Spring Island and accommodation fills quickly. Students are encouraged to book lodging as soon as possible after registering. A list of recommended nearby bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals will be provided upon registration.
